• Should Personal Trainers Guarantee Results?

Here is a topic which myself and friends debated over the weekend. It would be great to see what the guys on this forum think in relation to personal Trainers Guaranteeing results. There are in essence two trains of thought for the matter, and two distinct sides of the fence. On side one, we have those who believe that all services should guarantee results, on the otherside those that call themselves realists and believe guaranteed results be be impossible.

Side one: Personal Trainers should Guarantee results.
The fitness industry is possibly the only industry in the world which does not guarantee results. Imagine you took your car to a local garage and paid in advance for it to be repaired. You would be very entitled to a refund if you received you car back and it was still not working, would you not? I work with certain personal Trainers who are so entwined with this belief that it has actually cost them money in refunds on clients who did not see the expected results.

Side two: Guaranteeing results is unrealistic
The amount of time any Personal Trainer can spend with a client is limited to that which the client can afford. Presumably, if you can afford a PT 24/7 then guaranteed results should be a given. In reality however a personal Trainer may spend just 3 hours a week with his/her client and has no control over the dedication of the individual outside of these times. A personal Trainer should be able to offer recommended advice, but money back guarantees are unrealistic as they rely upon the honesty of the client in fulfilling these requests.

Which side do you fall on? There may be a middle ground in which guarantees may be offered to clients who prescribe themselves to enough time with a PT, but doe this offer an unfair level of service? Your thoughts are appreciated below.

There are many sides to this arguement, but more and more recently I have seen a rise in PT's giving poor poor advice. Im not grouping all PT's together, but alot more gym instructors seem to have taken a day course in personal training and decided they'd like a go at designing plans and tailoring diets. I've witnessed it first hand, as a personal trainer at my local gym gave my girlfriend the most un-thoughtful plan you could imagine. He literally told her to do each weights machine for 3 sets of 10 reps and then said to do 10 minutes each on 3 pieces of cardio equipment. NOW WHERES THE THOUGHT IN THAT?! But obviously GOOD personal trainers, who really strive to be the best, and help make their clients the best are alot different. As said above, they can not physically guarentee results, when alot of the deciding factors in attaining results are down to the trainee, not the trainer.

I think it could offer a sign of confidence to clients if a Personal Trainer did guarantee results. I find it shocking DHumphries that any PT worth his salt would create such a basic 'Fitness Instructor level' training plan. In my eyes this would represent basic training 101 and would certainly not be optimal for most gym goers. Its an interesting point this. Physique-Solutions article assumes that all trainers know what they are doing, placing failure on to the clients if results are not witnessed. maybe guarantees could be offered with a Caveat that clients follow exact advise when not with said trainer? What percentage of PT's (if any) do you think currently offer a guarantee?

I think all Personal Trainers should guarantee results. If they did then it would be impossible for these 'fly-by-night' wannabe's to keep faking it. If nothing else it lowers the value of other Personal Trainers and leads people to think that they can never achieve their aims. How often have we heard the, 'Ive tried everything' excuse? I dont think bad PT's help this matter. A good PT will also be able to inspire their clients into keeping their diet clean in their absence.

I disagree Rockstar. I have trained at gyms long enough to know that most people who attend will not achieve their results, regardless of initial intentions. I would be willing to bet good money that maybe only 2% witness the goals they want to see. Is this down to the Personal Trainer/Instructors available in the gym? Maybe? If you could find a very motivated team you may increase the number of clients achieving goals to a slightly higher number. I doubt this would ever go past 10% though. I have a friend who works in sales in a gym and he says that only 10% of the people he signs up ever actually bother attending the gym for more than 8 visits. He has also witness a very high number of no-shows with the personal Trainers who work there. How could a PT possibly offer a guarantee if the client only bothers to show up for 50% of the sessions. In an ideal world, everybody who attends the gym would be super motivated and would achieve all their goals. In reality though this just does not happen. Could a dentist offer a money back guarantee because you dont have shiny white teeth? Not if you go home and consume loads of sugar and avoid brushing. Its a nice idea, but I honestly cannot see a practical side to it.
